Custom Landscaping in Naperville, IL

Custom Outdoor Living, Designed and Built for Naperville Homes

LANDSCAPING BUILT FOR ESTABLISHED NAPERVILLE LOTS

Naperville is our home ground. We have designed, built, and maintained landscapes across this city since 1985, which means we have worked the two very different kinds of yard Naperville hands a homeowner: the tight, tree-shaded lots of the historic district and the wide, graded lots of the newer south and west subdivisions.

CB Conlin Landscapes is a Naperville-based landscape company built on three principles: design, build, and enjoy. We are not a mow-and-go crew. Every project starts with a licensed landscape architect and ends with a space your family actually uses. If you want one accountable partner who treats a backyard like a piece of architecture, you are in the right place.

Landscaping Services We Provide In Naperville

We run a project end to end so you are not coordinating five trades on your own. Naperville homeowners hire us for four connected categories of work.

CUSTOM LANDSCAPE DESIGN

Design is where the value is created. Barry Conlin is a Licensed Professional Landscape Architect, and our designers read the house, the grade, and how you want to use the yard before a line is drawn. You can follow the step-by-step design process from the first site walk to a finished presentation drawing.

HARDSCAPING & OUTDOOR LIVING

Patios, outdoor kitchens, pergolas, seating walls, and covered lounges turn an unused corner of the yard into a second living room. On Naperville’s newer lots that often means engineering a stable base over compacted builder fill first; on older lots it means fitting stone to grades that were set decades ago. Several of our foremen have been building here for more than 25 years.

POOLSCAPES & FIRE FEATURES

A pool is only as good as the space around it. We plan pools, spas, fire pits, and fireplaces into one cohesive design rather than adding them after the concrete is already poured, which is where a lot of Naperville backyards lose usable square footage.

LANDSCAPE MAINTENANCE

Our residential maintenance division keeps finished spaces sharp through every Illinois season, from spring plantings to snow. It is why many Naperville clients stay with us for years after the install crew leaves.

WHY NAPERVILLE YARDS CALL FOR A TAILORED APPROACH

There is no single Naperville yard. Near downtown and the Riverwalk, the historic neighborhoods carry a mature canopy, narrow side yards, and grades that were established long before the current owners arrived. Out toward White Eagle, Tall Grass, Ashwood, and Stillwater, the lots are larger but sit on former farmland that was cut, filled, and compacted during construction. Both sit in USDA hardiness zone 5b, so plant selection has to survive humid summers and hard winter freezes in the same twelve months. Naturalized areas near Springbrook Prairie and the DuPage River corridor add their own drainage and deer pressure that a template plan ignores.

Field Note From Our Crews

On south-side new-construction lots we almost always find compacted clay fill under a thin cap of topsoil. We observed the same failure repeatedly on installs we were called in to correct: hardscape and plantings set straight onto that fill, then patios that heave and root zones that drown within two seasons. We decompact, amend, and design positive drainage before any stone or planting goes down.

The Messy Middle: Working A Historic-District Lot

The harder Naperville jobs are downtown, not out in the subdivisions. On a historic lot the constraint is access: a tight side yard, mature oaks whose root zones cannot be trenched through, and neighbors close enough to hear the compactor. Our fix is sequencing. We stage material off site and bring it in as needed, hand-dig inside critical root zones instead of running a machine through them, and set patios on a permeable base so the tree above still gets water and air. It is slower. It is also the difference between keeping a 60-year-old canopy and killing it eighteen months after the patio goes in.

How To Approach Your Naperville Project

Where you are in the city changes the right first move. A quick way to think about it:

  • If you are in a newer south or west subdivision with a blank, graded yard, then start with soil and drainage, then build hardscape, then plant. Skipping the first step is what fails later.
  • If you are in the historic district with mature trees, then design around root zones and access before you commit to a layout.
  • If a pool is in the picture now or in a few years, then plan the poolscape into the master design up front rather than retrofitting around it.

DESIGN-BUILD VS. PIECEMEAL CONTRACTORS

The biggest decision most Naperville homeowners make is not which pavers to pick. It is whether to hire one accountable design-build firm or stitch a project together from separate trades.

OUR LOCAL TRACK RECORD IN NAPERVILLE

We would rather show than tell. Our portfolio of custom landscapes runs across Naperville and out into Hinsdale, Glen Ellyn, and Downers Grove, and it is the best picture of how we handle both a compact historic backyard and a wide new-build lot. Four decades in one city means most of our new work still comes from neighbors of finished projects.
