Garden in a City
Victorian elegance lives on in the City of Naperville’s historic downtown where painted ladies line the shady streets.
Following a two-year construction project that doubled the footprint of the original 1871 house, the owners of this Victorian style residence turned their attentions to the creation of outdoor living spaces that would echo the home’s historic character and employ materials and decorative elements authentic to the mid nineteenth century.
The shallow slice of space behind the house was re-imagined as a series of intimate outdoor rooms connected by brick and gravel paths to achieve the highly textured compositions characteristic of Victorian design. Lush green borders of flowering hydrangea that line the upper and lower terrace are a counterpoint to the home’s two-story colorful façade and the rich tones of the vintage Purington paving brick.
